The axe is generally the second tool you obtain upon starting a world. It can work as a weapon, however, it isn't that viable, due to low damage.
Like the Pickaxe, it is used to break plant tiles like bushes and trees. This includes tiles that grow in other biomes, such as Acid Crystalss.
