Ladders are one of the two items that can be used to climb and escape from underground areas, is very cheaply made from Wood or Steel Ingots for little common resources, and can be crafted in the player inventory, or via the Build Menu
It is recommended to always have a stack of Wood in your inventory to craft on demand.
One note is that it does not require a background tile to anchor it to and is free-standing.
Alternatives are the Rope.
