Rope is one of the two items that can be used to climb and escape from underground areas, is very cheaply made from Plant Fiber for little common resources, and can be crafted in the player inventory, or Workbench
It is recommended to always have a stack of plant fiber in your inventory to craft on demand.
One note is that it will require a background tile to anchor it to, unlike the ladder which is free-standing.
Alternatives are the Ladder.
